Root Canal Treatment

At the core of each tooth there is a composition of blood vessels and nerves called pulp. The pulp rests inside an area called the root canal. If the pulp becomes infected, you may require root canal treatment. Often, Root Canal Treatment is the only way to save a tooth, and on the whole, this is a treatment that can be incredibly effective. If you do not have the treatment, then you are at risk of abscesses forming, which can be both painful and dangerous.

How can the pulp become damaged?

There are a number of ways that the pulp of your tooth can be damaged. This includes:

  1. Decay: If decay has spread through the tooth, to the pulp, you may experience nerve pain and damage
  2. Trauma: If a tooth has been knocked or injured through force, the nerve can become non-vital
  3. Previous dental work on the tooth: Teeth with large fillings, or crowns may be at higher risk of the nerve becoming non-vital over time

What can I expect during root canal treatment?

There are a number of different stages to the process of Root Canal Treatment. Firstly, you are given a local anesthetic to ensure that you don’t feel any kind of discomfort during the process. A rubber dam is put around your tooth so that it doesn’t get mixed with saliva during the treatment.

Your dentist will open up the tooth, and all decayed nerve tissue along with any debris will be removed. The tooth will be cleaned out and disinfected.

When the cleaning is complete, your dentist will place a root filling in the nerve space and restore the tooth.

It is often necessary to fit a crown on the tooth, after Root Canal Treatment is completed.

Will my root canal treatment be painful?

With the advanced treatment methods and anaesthetic we have nowadays, you can expect a pain-free procedure, with some manageable pain once the anaesthetic has worn off. There is no need to worry – the horror stories you’ve heard about Root Canal are no longer true with modern dentistry!

What happens after the procedure?

After the anaesthetic has worn off, you may feel some pain from the area for several days, which can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. If there’s any problems, please give us a call so we can help.

Most people find that they’re able to go straight back to their normal activities after having root canal treatment, although there’s nothing wrong with taking it easy for the rest of the day if you need.
