Dental Crowns at Maldent Dental

A crown is a cover that is placed on top of a tooth, with the aim of restoring the shape and function of the tooth. Comonly used as part of Root Canal treatment.

A crown is made over 2 appointments:

During the first appointment, your dentist will shape the tooth and take impressions, or a scan of the tooth to send to the dental laboratory. Your dentist will place a temporary crown before you leave. The impression is then used by the dental laboratory to create a bespoke fitting crown. At the 2nd appointment (usually 2 weeks later), your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the definitive crown in place

When is a crown needed?

There are many situations where it might be deemed necessary to have a crown, including:

  • If you have a tooth that is weak and needs to be protected from either decay or from breaking. Often this is the case after Root Canal Treatment.
  • To restore a tooth that has been worn down or broken
  • To support a tooth that has already been extensively filled
  • To change the way that your teeth look in some way

What can crowns be made of?

The material that your dentist chooses for your crown will very much depend on your own individual needs, and what is best for the tooth in question. Full ceramic/porcelain crowns are a very popular material nowadays, due to their great aesthetics and strength. Crowns can also be made from metal or porcelain bonded to metal.

How can I care for my crown?

Although you don’t need to do anything special for your crown specifically, you will need to ensure that you have a good dental routine in place. Crowns can become decayed, just like a regular tooth – it is recommended to brush 2x daily and clean in between your teeth once a day.
