Dental Bridges at Maldent Dental

A bridge is an option to replace a missing tooth. As the name suggests, it ‘bridges’ the gap between your existing teeth, with the replacement tooth attached to its neighbour(s). In this way, you can get a full mouth of teeth without anyone ever needing to know that you even had a gap in the first place.

What kinds of dental bridges are there?

There are 2 main types of bridges:

    • Traditional bridges: these will require you to have a crown placed on the tooth either side of the gap, in order to hold the replacement tooth in place. These are made from porcelain, or porcelain bonded to metal. A cantilever bridge is where the tooth on one side only is used to hang off the replacement tooth.
      • Maryland / Bonded bridge: These are made from porcelain and will be supported by a framework, which is usually made from metal. There will be bonded to your existing teeth, often only on one side. With this option, the neighbouring tooth often only requires minimal preparation and sometimes does not require any drilling at all.

Cantilever bridges: this is the best option where there are only adjacent teeth on one side. This is usually only used in the front of the mouth, as there is too much pressure when used on the teeth at the back.

      What does the procedure involve?

The first thing to do is to come and see us to discuss whether a bridge is indeed the ideal choice for you. We will take a look at your teeth, and usually take an x-ray to assess the neighbouring teeth and the gap present. Once this has been done, we can come to a decision about whether a bridge would be the best choice for your requirements.

Once we have decided together that the procedure will take place, you will be offered your first appointment. Here, the teeth on either side of the bridge will be prepared and impressions will be taken so the bridge can be made. You may be given a temporary bridge until your next appointment.

Then, at your second appointment, the temporary bridge will be taken out and replaced with the definitive bridge that has been made for you.

How to take care of a bridge

It is important you maintain good oral hygiene around your bridge, in order to have the maximum longevity out of it. Bridges and holding teeth can become decayed, just like regular teeth. Your dentist and hygienist will show you the best way to clean around your bridge.
